THERE was no wind at all coming off Moreton Bay even though the clouds were moving quickly overhead from the east.

The Shorncliffe Pier was still closed, with a number of piles now leaning into the water. The gazebo near the far end sat in ghostly silence watching over the bay as dawn broke.

The hills of Moreton Island rose above the horizon sheltering the bay from the heavy swells crossing the Pacific Ocean. Only the smallest of wavelets lapped over the sand flats slowly becoming inundated by the incoming tide.
