Ghost gum on the Signata Trail

Ghost gum on the Signata Trail

STANDING pale and dominant amongst the fire blackened ironbarks was a striking ghost gum.

Fire had recently swept over this ridge blackening the ground and the tree trunks and burning some of the foliage orange. Although moderate rain had fallen in the past two days, the strong acrid smell of burnt wood hung in the air.

The ghost gum had been largely unaffected by the fire as it sits in the middle of the Signata Trail following the ridge towards the top of Spider Hill, the tallest summit in the Chermside Hills Reserve. The walking trail prevented the recent fire from spreading across to the other side from right to left. Another fire that had burnt on the left hand side a year or two ago had likewise been stopped by the trail. The ghost gum had escaped both fires.
