Mount Ngauruhoe

Mount Ngauruhoe

AT THE centre of the North Island is the Tongariro massif, a large volcano with numerous cones. What is reputed to be New Zealand's greatest day walk goes over the top of this, climbing to around 1900 metres above sea level

There are two side trips the adventurous can do climbing the summits of Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, the two highest summits at 2289 and 1975 metres above sea level respectively.

Today was my second successful climb of the Ngauruhoe summit. Although from here at the bottom the air was deceptively still, a gale was blowing at the summit making it hard to stand up. Nonetheless I had conquered the summit of this almost perfect cone that didn't even exist just two thousand years ago.
